It can be a little bit daunting dealing with web companies. You just want a website, but you don’t know what all the jargon means, and, chances are, you probably don’t really want to know – you just want a website.

So where do you start?

Finding a web designer

First you need to find a web designer / web agency that you are happy with. Like with any other industry ask your colleagues and see who they recommend. If no one has any recommendations phone around and get some quotes.

Getting a quote

You need to think about what you actually want. A common mistake is to start too big, often for smaller companies a basic site with a few pages is a good place to start. To help you get started we have created a questionnaire document which aims to get you thinking about how the site should look, who your competitors are, what you want the site to do, etc.

Be realistic with the timescale

The smaller the site, the quicker it can be up and running, but remember you also need to get the content together and this can take time. We have created a basic project timescale to help you plan your project. Remember, though, this is a guide, some projects may be quicker but most larger projects will take longer to develop and test.

You must always allow a good testing period before a site goes live this gives you time to iron out any problems before the site is shown to the public.

Hosting a website

This is where the site will live. We prefer to host all websites we develop, it means that we can take responsibility for their smooth running and day-to-day maintenance in an environment we are used to and have full access to. You may already host your own website though and have paid server fees for a period of time. In this instance we can set up your site in your own environment.

You can download our Hosting a Website Guide here. This contains information that you need to provide us with to enable us to host your site.
